Coronavirus: History will not be kind to us if Nigerians go hungry - Tinubu tells FG

Former governor of Lagos state, Bola Tinubu has appealed to the federal government to protect Nigerians from hunger and other disease while fighting the Coronavirus pandemic.

The APC Chieftain stated that history will not be kind to the federal government if Nigerians go hungry amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement released on Wednesday April 15, Tinubu averred that social intervention programmes will only cater for small scale traders and leave out the average salary earners who lost their jobs because of the lockdown order.
The former Governor also called for the expansion of the school feeding programme and push for debt relief.

Tinubu said;
“We dare not underestimate the twin dangers posed by the virus itself and the economic consequences of the public health response. Our goal must be that the people live neither with disease nor in hunger. This situation presents a historic chance to establish a more beneficial social contract between the government and the governed.

“If we so utilize this moment, it will be recorded as a pivotal one in our national history. If we allow this moment to slip, history will not be obliged to treat us with great mercy.

“The worst of this dark potential can be avoided if the government is prepared to act in ways that not only feed people but protect the basic contours of our private-sector economy so that it can more quickly revive once normal conditions return.

The APC chieftain recommended;
Suspension/amendment of the 5% deficit limit of the fiscal responsibility law which prohibits fiscal deficit from exceeding 5% of the nation’s gross domestic product. “The best step would be to suspend the 5% budgetary limit for this fiscal year. Alternatively, the limit should be raised to 25-30% to allow the federal government more room to make the minimum expenditures necessary to save the economy and the people,” he wrote.

Emergency sustenance payments: This, he said, could be paid to households for monthly needs or as emergency unemployment insurance to people who can prove they have been laid off due to the crisis or as payroll support to businesses to help them maintain staff so they can return to full operation when normalcy returns.

Re-establishment of agricultural market and commodity boards for strategically important crops to stabilise farmers’ income and consumer prices.
Import suppression through luxury taxes, higher tariffs and higher import processing fees due to the partial closure of ports of entry due to the coronavirus.

Conditional interest-free loans from the Central Bank of Nigeria to large businesses. Tinubu said some of the conditions could be maintaining their workforce and even hiring an extra 10% for two or three months at reduced wages. “These additional workers should be youth hired under a temporary internship or training program.”

Another wa: 36-Year-Old Woman Looks Like 9-Month-Old Baby

We bring to you the curious case of a real-life Benjamin Button, with a twist. A Brazilian woman, who has neither aged nor is getting any younger. Born on May 7, 1981, Maria Audete do Nascimento still has the body of a baby.
Maria belongs to a poor family, living in a mud house in Ceara, Brazil. Her family consists of her father and his second wife, who has been caring for her ever since her own mother died, 13 years ago. The family cannot afford to provide any form of treatment for Maria, whose condition could have been reversed if treated at birth.
For now, she continues to live like a baby, unable to tend to her own needs, and unable, even to speak. The home in which Maria lives, however poor, does not seem short of love. Her step-mother, Dora, has taken care of the woman-child since the day she was married. Dora believes that it is the passion of her life and that the child was sent to her as a gift of God, to take care of.
Experts from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ceara believe that what Maria suffers from is a severe deficiency of the thyroid hormone. As a result of hypothyroidism, her body was never able to develop physically or mentally. They also went on to say that if the case had been identified early on, Maria may have grown up as a normal child.
The University has agreed to provide free treatment to Maria, to enable her to be a little more independent – to walk, eat and say a few words. But for now she is, in some ways, what every parent wishes for – a child that never grows up.

COVID 19 comparisons for some key African countries, Nigeria inclusive

FFK compares COVID19 testing in Nigeria with Ghana, South Africa, says many Nigerians are likely to positive

The former Minister of Aviation and Culture, Femi Fani-Kayode has this morning taken to his verified Twitter account @realFFK to compare the rate at which testings for the Coronavirus is taking place in Nigeria, with the rate at which testings are being done in Ghana and South Africa.

Recall that yesterday, the Punch Newspaper wrote that only about 5000 Nigerians have been tested for the Coronavirus, as against Ghana's thirty seven thousand, nine and fifty four testings and South Africa's eighty thousand and eighty five.
Thus, considering Nigeria's over 200 million population, this figure is no doubt discouraging; moreso, when there are only a few testing Coronavirus units in Nigeria. And so, reacting to this, the former spokesman to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Femi Fani-Kayode has stated that by implication, this means that many more Nigerians may be positive without even knowing it:
According to @MobilePunch only 5000 out of a population of 200 million Nigerians have been tested for Covid 19. This means that far many more people may have the coronavirus in our country than we think. 37,000 & 80,000 have been tested in Ghana and South Africa respectively.

He however tempered this statement by reminding Nigerians that 90% of infected patients are asymptomatic while only 10% show symptoms and therefore people should not panic:
90% of those that are infected with coronavirus are asymptomatic. This means that they don't even know that they have the disease because they do not show any symptoms.Only 10% of those infected show symptoms & only 1% of those that do end up dying. Stop the panic but stay safe!
