Naira Breaks 3-Year Jinx, Gains 12% In 4 Days By Innocent Onyeagolum

The value of the naira recorded the highest and fastest gain of 11.9 per cent in four days at the parallel market in over three years last week as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) sold a total of $372.4 million to ease the pressure on the local currency.
Naira which rose to an all time high of N522 to the dollar last week Monday had gained N62 by the weekend to sell at N460 to the greenback. The apex bank had sold $370.9 million dollars on Tuesday and another $1.5 million on Thursday, sending the value of the naira up.
Chief executive of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane said he expects the CBN to commit itself to a regular and predictable supply of dollars to the forex spot market in March in furtherance to its forex sales last week.
Overnight lending rates among banks closed on Thursday at 117.5833 per cent before improved liquidity eased the rates to 18.875 per cent in Friday. Banks scrambled for naira liquidity to position at the auctions as called for bids from retail end-users in preparation for the first PTA/School Fees auction.
Although the implementation of the revised forex market guideline has been greeted with much optimism, especially as the value of the naira rose, analysts said they do not believe the policy will fully address the liquidity of challenges in the market.
While they are optimistic that the naira may not breach the N500 mark in the short to medium term, they say pressure on the naira will continue as the CBN refuses to lift the forex ban on the 41 items at the interbank market.
Analysts at Afrinvest Limited said they do not believe the new forex policy can sustainably address the lingering forex liquidity challenges in the economy without relaxing forex rate peg and review of list of items ineligible for forex transactions in the parallel market.
“Personal and Business travel allowances, school fees and medical fees have been estimated to account for less than 20 per cent of total forex demand in the country hence there is still a large volume of demand (particularly the 41 ineligible items) that could pressure rate at the parallel market.”

“Our medium term conviction remains that maintaining the interbank rate at current peg (without implementing deeper reforms required) will lead to deterioration in current account as more demand surfaces. Hence, there is still a need to address the forex liquidity challenge appropriately and we reaffirm our view that increased flexibility will be needed in order to allow restore investor confidence and boost autonomous forex supply.”

HORRIBLE: Man Caught His Wife Pants Down With His Best Man And This Happen Next…

Mr Ademola Odunade, the President of a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, has dissolved an 11-year-old marriage between Emmanuel Oyebadejo and his wife Bukola over adult.ery and trouble making. Odunade remarked on Thursday that there was no more need for any settlement since both Emmanuel and Bukola have remarried.
“Therefore, in the interest of peaceful coexistence, the union between Emmanuel and Bukola has ceased to be, henceforth. “Bukola shall take custody of the 10-year-old child produced by the union and Emmanuel shall provide N5,000 as monthly feeding allowance for the upkeep of the child. “In addition, Emmanuel shall be responsible for the child’s welfare and education,” the Arbitrator said.
Earlier in his explanation before the court, Emmanuel said that his wife, Bukola was forni.cating with his long-time friend who stood as his best man on their wedding day.
“My lord, soon after Bukola moved into my home, she stopped obeying my instructions and often took me through series of insult, abuses and disrespect. “She started engaging in adult.ery with my long-time friend who stood as best man on our wedding day, an act which I consider as horrible.
“When Bukola became an unrepentant trouble maker, I reported her on a number of occasions to her parents and Bukola’s father did a lot in changing her positively, but her mother was a very bad influence on her. “Then, I handed her over to my best man who I felt could talk to her on my behalf.
“I noticed that they were frequently having meetings, but their meetings were adulte.rous ones, my people told me and I caught them myself. “During that period, I got a job in Lagos and I sometimes travel to Abuja for purpose of business. That friend of mine was still having s*xual affairs with her.
“I had stopped having any s*xual relationship with Bukola since I got to know that she has become adulte.rous. She told me that she was preg.nant and I said that I was not responsible for it. “My lord, we have stopped leaving together for the past six years, but I have been sending N2,500 every two weeks to her for the upkeep of the child. “I will like to have custody of the child,” Emmanuel prayed the court.
However, Bukola who did not oppose the divorce suit was also silent on the allegation that she was adulte.rous.
“My lord, Emmanuel is in no way a responsible husband and father. He had abandoned the child and I for more than nine years and the child can’t even recognize him. “He has sent no money to us for care,” Bukola stated.
However, there were contradictory evidences from the witnesses supporting both Emmanuel and Bukola as to whether Emmanuel was responsible or not.
Emmanuel resides at Sango-Ota, Ogun State, while Bukola resides at Odo-Oba area of Ibadan.

Another Igbo Girl Ms Rose Peter Chukwu Drugged By Islamic Alfa, Forcefully Married Off To Muslim Man For 7-Yrs, See Her Shocking Revelation

Ms Rose Chukwu
More facts have emerged on how Rose Chukwu, an indigene of Ebonyi State who was kidnapped, converted to Islam and forced to marry one Olatunji Sulyman from Kwara state.
Rose in an interview with The AUTHORITY in Abuja, revealed that she was made to loss her senses immediately she drank a concoction given to her by an Islamic cleric-Alfa.
She revealed that the first few days she want to see Sulyman in Kwara State, she was taken to the Alfa who gave her the concoction to drink, after¬wards she could not remember, nor call her family members again for a period of over 7 years.
According to her, it was when the concoction was beginning to lose its potency that she remembered that the people she was living all these years was not her family members. She then began to remember her family members and began to make moves to reunite with her family.
Rose revealed that: “I was invited to Kwara State by Tunji. When I got there, he was just a friend. They then told me to visit one Alfa and that it is a process of turning me into a Muslim. I was shocked by the whole thing.
All I could remember was that the Alfa gave me a concoction (agbo) which I drank. After that everything changed. I did not go home, I did not call home and I did not even have anything to do with my fam¬ily for over 7 years.
“So, after everything started making sense to me, I then started looking for my sister and was planning to leave.
“When they discovered that I was planning to leave, they now told me that they want to get married to me and I insisted that I was not interested in the marriage.
“On December 12, last year, Tunji’s father called me and told me that he wanted me to stay. Because I was al¬ready planning of leaving, considering that I was the only person there, I cannot force my way even if I wanted to. I don’t have any family member in Kwara State, they are the only people I know there. I severally told Tunji that I was going to leave.
But he usually replies me that I cannot leave in peace but rather in pieces. He vowed that ei¬ther my people would come and carry my coffin or I would remain there. I know that he will make true his threat. I decided to lie low and strategies on whatever I want to do.”
She further explained that: “On December 16, Tunji’s father called me again to the family house that there is an emergency. When I got there, everybody was seated including the Alfa. They said that they wanted to marry me formally in an Islamic way.

I told them that it was not possible because none of my family members was there. They said that it was not necessary that one Tunji’s uncle is going to stand for me. They then brought the man to stand for me as my father. I was in so much agony and told them that I am not going to be a party to this.
One of his uncle then called me and advised me that the best thing I will do is to do whatever they told me to do, if not they may kill me. I was afraid for my life and that of my children. All that I could do was to do all that they wanted.
“After the marriage that day, I then left the place. But on December 20, Tunji then got married to another lady and on December 27, they left for Dubai for honey moon. I then picked all my things and my children and left.”
What amazed Rose most, according to her, was how the Tunji sent the police to trail her wherever she ran to.
“His parents informed him that I have left.
He then came back and started using the police to threaten all my family members. He used the police to come and arrest my mother and my younger brother and everybody that was close to me. To my surprise, the police were just doing his biddings.
“When I discovered that my life and that of my children are not safe, I then relocated to Enugu. But to my utmost surprised, on January 27, I was in my house when some two gentlemen came in that they were from the FCT Police Command.
They said that they came for my arrest. I then called my neighbours and told them to take care of my children and that they should not release them to anybody even if they come in the form of police. When they took me to the police command in Enugu, they police said that they order given to them was to lock me up. But after heated argument, they then rented a hotel for me to stay near the police command and the following day, they took me and my children back to Abuja.
“On reaching Abuja, they were planning to detain me when my lawyer arrived and they left me on bail. They ordered the police man to follow me to my brother’s place where I was staying.
When I returned to the FCT command the following day, they told me to go back and return the on Monday which I did. When I came, to told me to go back and bring my children in¬sisting that, that was the instruction of the Commissioner of Police.
When I brought them, my child was kidnapped in the presence of the police and they did nothing about it,” she noted.
However, Rose’s mother, Edit Chukwu, has raised the alarm that the acclaimed husband of her daughter, Olatunji has for several days been threatening life.
She therefore called on the federal government and well meaning Nigeri¬ans to protect her and her family from extinction as he has vowed to eliminate them.
“I am calling on the government and all well meaning Nigerians to come to my aid as strange people hover around my house in odd hours. I don’t feel safe.
“Tunji did not marry my daughter. Nobody gave her to him. He did not know where I came from . He is saying that I came from Adamawa, but that is not true,” she reiterated.

Serious Protests As Osinbajo Withholds Assent To Four Bills, See How Senate Reacted

osy
The Senate has said it will consult with its legal team for advice on the decision of the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to withhold assent to four bills passed by the National Assembly.

The bills are Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill 2016, National Lottery (Amendment) Bill 2016, Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund (Amendment) Bill 2016, and the Currency Conversion (Freezing Orders) (Amendment) Bill 2016.

In the four letters sent to the Senate, dated February 7, 2017, the Acting President gave various reasons for his decision “Pursuant to Section 58(4) of the Constitution.”

On the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund (Amendment) Bill 2016, Osinbajo said, “The reasons for withholding assent to the bill are the concerns surrounding board composition, funding arrangements, limitation of liability of funds, and proposals to increase levels of un-collaterised loans from N5,000 to N250,000.”

For withholding asset to the Currency Conversion (Freezing Orders) (Amendment) Bill 2016, the Acting President said, “The rationale for withholding assent to the bill is the concern regarding modalities for the communication of asset forfeiture orders.”

Osinbajo also said the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill 2016 could not be assented to, saying, “The rationale for withholding assent to the bill are the concerns regarding certain words and phrases utilised in the draft bill that may be inconsistent with the Principal Act (for example, Section 6 of the bill with Section 21 of the Principal Act) and the spirit behind the proposed amendments.”

Also, the Acting President said he withheld assent to the National Lottery (Amendment) Bill 2016 due to “the existence of pending legal challenge to the competence of the National Assembly to legislate on the subject matter.”

After the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, read Osinbajo’s letters to senators at plenary on Wednesday, Senator Dino Melaye, who sponsored the National Lottery (Amendment) Bill, raised a point of order and dismissed the Acting President’s reason for not assenting to it.

Citing Section 4 of the constitution, the senator described the court process and the decision by Osinbajo as against the principle of separation of powers.
Melaye said, “Mr. President, the explanation for withholding the assent as stipulated in the letter by the Acting President is because there is a pending litigation on this matter. Mr. President, democracy is standing on the basic principles of separation of powers and it has divided this into three; the executive, the legislature and the judiciary.
“Mr. President, the role of the executive is to carry out its fundamental objective by signing anything that has been passed by this House and anyone who has a problem with it can go to court in compliance with the provisions of Section 6 of the constitution.
May it not be a bad day for democracy if we keep quiet and allow the powers of the legislature to be usurped by the non-compliance to the provisions of the constitution.”
Saraki, in his response, said the chamber would seek legal advice on the matter as it had to do with separation of powers.
He said, “I think the procedure is that we will refer this (issue) to our legal department to give us advice on interpretation on some of the things that you have said, for us to be properly guided. But, I agree with you that it is a matter that we must take seriously because it goes down to the issue of separation of powers. We would get the opinion of the legal department.”
But Senator George Sekibo, rose up to say that the National Assembly had the powers to override the veto of the President.
He said, “The way the constitution is framed, they have their own roles to play and we have our own role to play. We check each other. I know that the matter is in court and based on our rules, we cannot discuss it; it is a different thing.
But if it is just that the President did not give assent, we have to look at the merit of the particular bill if it meets the standards and if the court matter is not going to impede what we are going to do. Then, we can override the veto of the President.”
Again, Saraki stated that the issue should be referred to the legal department for interpretation and counsel.
Osinbajo had last week assented to seven bills passed by the legislature.

Umahi applauded for signing Pension Bill into law by Comr. Nwaze

The Chairman of Junior Workers Association of Ebonyi State, Comrade Uguru Uchenna has applauded Governor Umahi for signing Pension Bill into Law which will enable Ebonyi workers to access their retirement benefits without stress.
He stated this in a press briefing at the Government House, Abakaliki. Comrade Uguru maintained that the contributory pension law was for the interest of Ebonyi workers and pledged their total support to the present administration. “That junior workers are fully in support of the efforts of the Governor and government of Ebonyi State to strengthen the pensions of workers of Ebonyi State as it is for the good of civil servants"

Senator Andy Uba’s opinion and commitment to this struggle is partly informed by his desire to build a power station for Anambra state if elected governor, to enhance productivity, generate jobs, mass employment and prosperity in the state, as well as arrest the desperate security situation in the state, attract both local and foreign investors and curb the continuing exodus of quality manpower from the state.

According to #iStandWithAndyUba’s Volunteer Group Founder, Mr. Okonkwo Samuel, Senator Dr. Andy Uba also hopes to use the proposed state police to consolidate the security needs of his state as well as work for the exploitation of the long neglected oil & gas resources of Anambra State.
I think that Andy Uba is a politician to watch. His articulations and deft politics mark him out as one who not only understands the terrain in which he is operating but also the issues that are close to the hearts of the people he seeks to lead. His forthright declaration and support for a new constitution for Nigeria and his bold politics are bound to alter for the better the developmental paradigm of Anambra State, the South East and Nigeria in general.
Mr. Okonkwo Samuel, who has already remarked that given Andy Uba pronouncements and identification with the drive for true federalism in Nigeria, he has proved that unlike his fellow contestants in the Anambra governorship race, he, Uba, sees the bigger picture and understands the wider issues and possibilities for Anambra state and Nigeria as a whole, and is not one of those narrow-minded politicians without the depth of character, courage and perception to deliver or perform creditably in office. But what are the wider issues the Mr. Okonkwo refers to? It is true that when people of different ethnic or racial background congregate to build a nation, they tend initially to be parochial, but they do generally become cosmopolitan with time.

LADIES : BITTER TRUTH YOU MUST SWALLOW

  1. Sex doesn’t keep a man, if you like, turn 360% on bed, he will still dump you. Bleach until you become white, if he doesn’t notice the qualities of a wife in you, he will leave you.
  2. A man who win your love with cash may not stay forever. Real men don’t settle down with fake women who love money.
3. The beauty of a woman can take her to a Palace but her character will determine how long she stays in the palace. Beauty attracts men but character keep them.
4. Material things definitely has its merits but it cannot alone provide the riches of a truly meaningful life.
5. Being sexy without a character will not get you a husband, you will only get a boyfriend.
6. Sex can bring pleasure but it can never bring love, sex is a product of love, love is not a product of sex.
7. Sex can make a man stay with you overnight but love will make him stay for a lifetime.
8. There are some things that money just can’t buy like manners, moral and integrity.
9. How you dress will definitely determine how men will address you.

Obama returns to South Side Chicago, when will you return home? By Enyinnaya Appolos

Former American President, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle are back to their home town, South Side Chicago where they will build the Centre for Obama Foundation.

After eight years of serving America, its now time to serve and help in developing his area of Chicago. What? Develop South Side Chicago? Is South Side Chicago not developed? Whatever be the case, the bottomline is that the Obamas’ deliberate choice of South Side Chicago as the headquarters of the Obama Foundation buttresses the sayings that “there is no place like home” and “charity begins at home”.

As far as they’re concerned, it is time to be among their people and help in attracting anything their current and former status can attract to their people.

I am reminded of a discussion I had with my former boss, Late Ambassador Raph Uwechue, at his “African House” residence in Okwashi-Ukwu in Delta State sometime in 2011. The then former Ambassador and President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo who I served as media consultant said to me, “Enyi, I don’t know what we can do to encourage our people and leaders to return home after national service to be with our people. It is my wish to see Igbo leaders return to live among our people and open their businesses among our people after their national service. Part of our problem here is that our leaders refuse to come home even at old age.

They prefer to live in Lagos and Abuja even when they’re not needed there and we end up receiving them in beautiful caskets when they die. I built this African House here at Okwashi-Ukwu 30 years ago because I knew that after all said and done, I will return to my people to live with and among them.”
Abia State is blessed with men and women of timber and caliber, but we do not “feel” them, neither do our communities feel them.

Our big names live in Lagos and Abuja and many of them do not have even private homes at either Aba or Umuahia. Yes, some of them have buildings in their villages, where they spend few days every year, usually during Yuletide period and zoom off with their heavily armed convoys after Yuletide season.
Imagine what Aba or Umuahia will look like if we have our big names living among us or owning businesses at home.

Frankly, at times like this, i wish I am not the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as I would have been at liberty to write as I wish. I would have name names, but unfortunately my hands are tied. I can’t do that now before they say “the Governor said” when he never said anything.

For emphasis, this is my opinion as Enyinnaya Appolos, the common man from Isiko. Please take note.
Back to the issue. As I was saying, imagine that we have our big names, former this and former that, living with us after serving at the federal and state levels. All their big name friends and partners will come to visit them in Abia and contribute to the state’s economy one way or another.

If the big men brothers of my friend, John Okiyi Kalu, had built their homes at Umuahia, at least there would have been a GRA in Umuahia today that is not the product of colonial action. Same goes to Aba.
Even when our big men ask for and get land allocations from the state Government they merely wait for the allocating government to expire then sell the land and go to Abuja or Lagos to spend their profit from what is at best ugly land speculation in their home state.

Not long ago an elder statesman from Abia celebrated his 70th birthday at Abuja and invited the “who is who” from the state and beyond, to the event. As if reading my mind, one of the celebrant’s political sons who incidentally is from a neighboring Igbo state publicly confronted him and told him that his contemporaries from the south west and north will never celebrate this milestone at Abuja, and would have retired home at this time to live with their people. He pleaded with his mentor not to celebrate his 71st birthday at Abuja but rather to retire to his village before then.

Unfortunately the elder statesman didn’t make it to his 71st Birthday as he died few days before the date and his body was repatriated to Abia and buried in his palatial village home that he obviously didn’t enjoy post retirement.

I wish other living Abia elders will learn and retire home once they finish national service.
This is one reason I will always appreciate my elder brother, Eziuche Ubani, no matter his real or perceived shortcomings. When he was ready to build a radio station he thought of Aba first. Now you can imagine what Aba would have been today without Magic 102.9fm.

As an erudite journalist who have seen it all, as far as media practice is concerned, having a Magic FM at Abuja or lagos would been more economically lucrative to Hon. Ubani, but he chose to forfeit the ‘huge’ financial gains he would have made at Abuja or Lagos, and brought magic FM to Aba.

Today, because magic Fm is at Aba, we now have “Aba half marathon” which attract athletes from across Africa, and common folks have an outlet to express their views. Even Abians living abroad can get information on what is happening at home because Magic FM is available online from all parts of the globe. Also because of Magic FM at aba, we now have one Idoma man called Bonny Onogwu, aka Big Bonny, with us in Aba. We have Abi-Serah, Pastor Metu, Iyke D-Gee an many others who otherwise wouldn’t have had anything to do with Aba and they all pay income tax to Abia State Government.

Also, Mr. Raymond Nkemdirim, another Abian who retired recently from active service to Nigeria, has also opened a radio station-Flo FM in umuahia…good one I must confess.

What am I saying here? John Okiyi Kalu, tell your fellow big men and your brothers to always return home after national service to live and invest at home. JOK, tell your “money bag” brothers and sisters to come home and invest. I once heard you discussing a man you called Noko whom you praised lavishly for building a hotel at Abiriba and opened filling stations at Aba and Abiriba. (Meanwhile reserves rooms at the Hotel for my Igbiji Aku Mba ceremony coming soon in Abiriba). Abia needs more men like him and as far as I am concerned people like him should be the type we celebrate daily.

According to Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s senior adviser; “The South Side is the President and Mrs. Obama’s home so he intends to not only build the Center there, but also bring opportunities to the area. The President (Obama) was very eager to hear suggestions from the community members and encouraged them to continue the dialogue with his team after he left.”
If you come from Abia think…just think.

How Buhari’s ‘Sick Leave’ Is Affecting Nigerian Politics By Hamza Idris & Isiaka Wakili {Must Read}

Nigeria’s political environment has not been the same since President Muhammadu Buhari left for medical vacation in the United Kingdom.
However, attempts at gauging the body language of politicians and Nigerians in the past two weeks unveils an intriguing development on how power politics is being played.
A few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari left Nigeria for the United Kingdom, rumours floated on the social media that the number one citizen had died of an undisclosed ailment.
This was despite the fact that the president walked out of his room at the Presidential Villa by himself and headed to the airport after transmitting a letter to the National Assembly.
In 2015, Buhari rode to power on the pedestal of popular votes from across Nigeria in the midst of increasing great expectations for a new dawn in social, political and economic fortunes.
But recent events, occasioned by “dashed hopes”, have begun to tell on the president’s popularity. While some Nigerians believe that a good foundation has been laid by Buhari, others are of the opinion that the “tea party” is over as indicated by the use of his trip to ventilate their anger, with many drawing his rule to an end with the death rumours.
In the letter, President Buhari told the legislators of his desire to embark on a 10-day vacation and within the period, undergo a routine medical check-up. Ordinarily, the fact that the president had transmitted a letter to the National Assembly effectively ceding executive powers to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, just like what he did in the past, should have calmed frayed nerves.
However, curious analysts, opposition politicians and those who are not in tune with his style of governance picked hole in the “abrupt” manner the journey was announced and executed.
A suspicious gap When the president was departing for the 10- day vacation, Vice President Osinbajo, who was in Davos, Switzerland, attending the 2017 World Economic Forum, returned to Nigeria the following day and resumed duty as acting president.
“This abrupt departure of the president and abrupt return of the VP was the first thing that aroused suspicions that Buhari’s trip was not normal as Nigerians were made to believe,” said opposition politician, Musa Ali Bagi. “Protocol-wise, it was not normal for the president to start a vacation while his deputy was away because a vacuum was created,” he said.
And the suspicion of the president’s weak health state heightened when it was announced that he would not return on the appointed date. Buhari was to return on Sunday, February 5, so that he would be in his office on Monday, but sadly, it was on that Sunday that his aides announced he would not come.
“It was wrong for the president to also send a letter to the National Assembly, extending his leave without telling Nigerians when he would resume,” said PDP’s spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye.
“The President should know he is not a private citizen. He should know that Nigerians are the ones paying his health bills and therefore, he should tell them the true state of his health. He should not treat Nigerians with levity and should also know what is obtainable in civilized countries.
Nigeria is not a jungle,” he added. Considering the anxiety, several pictures of Buhari and his wife, among others, apparently “enjoying his vacation” at the Nigerian House in London, went viral, a public relations strategy that equally drew elaborate commentaries, with some saying the pictures were either old or fake.
But the APC National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party was overstretching its boundaries. “Does the PDP know more than what we have been told? What we know is what we have been told. This is the president of the country.
The elections are over, he is our president, he is the president of Nigeria, not of the APC or PDP. If the president told us that he needed to stay back to do some other medical things, it behoves on us, as responsible citizens, to pray for him and stop sensing an opportunity to retaliate,” he said.
Engagements at the Villa Since his departure and the return of Osinbajo, President Buhari’s office has since almost been deserted. Politicians, in particular, are no longer visiting the president’s office, and the acting president has been operating from the Vice President’s Wing of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
Since Osinbajo became acting president, only five state governors have at the time of filing this report on Friday, visited the Presidential Villa. They include Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara State), Mohammed Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo).
The National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, was at the State House for a meeting with the acting president Monday. He was not accompanied by any of the party’s national working committee.
The acting president had met with the leadership of the National Assembly over the economy and budget-related matters. Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara visited Osinbajo twice.
Osinbajo had led the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting three times between January 25 and February 8 where contracts were approved and certain policy decisions were made. Penultimate Wednesday, the council raised a task force to reduce prices of food items.
A N21 billion contract for the construction of the Ilorin-Kabba Road was awarded. Osinbajo also met with the service chiefs. On January 20, he was briefed on the situation in The Gambia, where Nigerian troops were deployed last month.
However, the routine meeting of the National Security Council (NSC), which is headed by the president, has not been convened since President Buhari departed. Since the president left, there has not been any meeting of the Council of State, even though Buhari himself only held such a meeting twice since his assumption of office on May 29, 2015.
On February 1, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo inaugurated new five national commissioners of the National Population Commission. But after administering the oath of office on them, the acting president made no remarks.
On Tuesday last week, the acting president forwarded the name of the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to the Senate for confirmation as substantive CJN.
Osinbajo has also been briefed by several heads of agencies including those of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Department of State Services. Two traditional rulers have visited the acting president at the State House.
They are the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi and the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu. The Presidency has asserted that Osinbajo has done everything he ought to do as acting president.
His Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, said in a chat with our correspondent on Thursday: “There is absolutely nothing needed to be done that has not been done, the acting president has presided over Federal Executive Council meetings and has met with service chiefs.
In fact, his first meeting with the service chiefs was when we came back from Davos when they briefed him on the situation in The Gambia. President Muhammadu Buhari has done well by transmitting powers to his deputy in line with the constitution,” he said.
Akande said Osinbajo could not have moved to Buhari’s office because the former is only acting as president. ‘Buhari, a victim of diabolical machinations’ Ardent supporters of the president told our correspondent that Buhari had been a victim of “diabolical machinations”, making it difficult for him to concentrate. Nasiru Aminu, a resident of Katsina, said many people were deploying diabolical means to distract Buhari from concentrating on his duties.
“The president was not as frail as he is now when he assumed office in 2015, that time, he was extremely agile and focused but he is no more himself now and we actually see the devil at work,” he said. Aminu said Buhari’s adversaries had deployed “prayer merchants to cause curses” that would make it difficult to concentrate.
“The opposition to the president is not just from southern Nigeria because hundreds of so- called Mallams are being sponsored to Saudi Arabia and other places to pray against the success of the president,” he said. Another supporter, Abba Yakubu, said the president was “tamed” right from the onset.
“We know that his several travels abroad at the inception of his administration were not normal, some unpatriotic elements tagged him through dubious means to be traveling and when he finally settled, they changed tactics, he is now constantly sick,” he said.
Strange stories from the Presidential Villa are not new. Former- first lady, Patience Jonathan, had reportedly said her health status significantly improved after her husband vacated the seat of power. Former presidential spokesmen, Reuben Abati Femi Fani-Kayode had also at different times aired their views on “strange happenings” in the Presidential Villa.
However, in his analogy, the Senator representing Katsina South, Senator Abu Ibrahim, said contrary to insinuations, Buhari is not sick but merely exhausted as a result of the various challenges confronting his government.
A close ally of the president, a Katsina senator who visited Buhari in London recently, said issues that might have taken a toll on the president, including the destruction of oil pipelines that reduced production to almost half, the fall in oil price that affected the economy and led to the current recession and the falling exchange rate that has affected the purchasing power of most Nigerians.
Monday’s demonstrations in Abuja and Lagos by two opposing groups- # I stand with Buhari and # I stand with Nigeria, brought to the fore, how Buhari’s disposition to power is redefining politics in the country. But the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it was only in Nigeria that citizens would act the way they acted over straight issues.
“I want to assure you, Mr. President is well and is in absolutely no danger. Mr. President, like I said elsewhere, is probably a victim of his own transparency,” he said.
