President Donald Trump signs executive order

On Thursday, the President of the United States of America, President Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to limit the broad legal protection that federal law currently provides to social-media and other online platforms.

This move was probably triggered by the occurrence few days ago when Twitter called two of his tweets "potentially misleading".

Speaking from the Oval Office ahead of signing the order, Trump accused Twitter of acting as an editor “with a viewpoint” and described the platform’s fact-check of his tweets as “political activism”.

He said that he would delete his Twitter account “in a heartbeat” if he felt the news media were fair to him. He said,

“We’re here today to defend free speech from one of the greatest dangers.

A small handful of social media monopolies controls a vast portion of all public and private communications in the United States.

They've had unchecked power to censor, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter, virtually any form of communication between private citizens and large public audiences."

Trump said that if his lawyers could find a way to legally shut down Twitter, “I would do it.”

The order escalates an already heated fight over how big social-media platforms handle politically charged content.

The companies long resisted stronger moderation efforts and have struggled to address growing pressure to combat the proliferation of misinformation and other problematic content in a way that avoids fueling criticism that they are inconsistent, biased or stifling free expression.

The executive order marks the Trump administration’s most aggressive effort against social-media companies.

The President has threatened for years to counteract what he and many conservatives see as a systemic bias against their political positions on social media.

His campaign on Thursday sent supporters an email seeking to raise money off the President’s feud with Twitter.

US set to announce travel ban on Brazil

The United States is poised to announce a travel ban from coronavirus-hit Brazil, a top aide to US President Donald Trump said.

“I think that we’ll have a new travel decision today with respect to Brazil and just like we did with the UK and Europe and China, and we hope that’ll be temporary,” Robert O’Brien, the US national security advisor, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“But because of the situation of Brazil, we’re going to take every step necessary protecting American people,” he said.

The United States had previously cut off travel from China, Europe and Britain as the virus surged in those countries. Brazil has emerged as the latest COVID-19 flashpoint, second only to the United States in the number of cases and with a death toll that has surpassed 22,000.

Trump orders places of worship to be reopened immediately

US President Donald Trump has announced that he has ordered governors to open up places of worship opining that is wrong for some state governors to designate 'liquor stores and abortion clinics' as 'essential services' but keep places of worship like churches, mosques and synagogues closed.

Amid the Coronavirus pandemic hat has killed over 95,000 people in the US, Trump on Friday said he is designating all places of worship – including churches, synagogues and mosques – "essential," saying he wants them to "open right now."

Reacting to the move by state governors of keeping "liquor stores and abortion centres" open during during the lockdown while keeping places of worship shuttered, Trump said in the White House briefing room,

"It's not right. I'm calling houses of worship essential."

"If there's any question, they're going to have to call me, but they're not going to be successful in that call," Trump said of state leaders.

"The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now, for this weekend, If they don't do it, I will override the governors. It's not right. This move is aimed at correcting this injustice. If there's any question, they're going to have to call me, But they are not going to be successful in that call. America, we need more prayer, not less", Mr Trump said before leaving the briefing room.

Trump appeared in the briefing room to read a short statement announcing he has approved guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help state and local leaders safely allow worship facilities to open back up.
