Great piece; great lessons! ERE WERE SITUATIONS WHERE CRIMINALS GUILTY OF SAME OFFENCE WERE TREATED DIFFERENTLY IN MY TOWN By Anayo M. Nwosu as Cited by Barr Nwala Nwanneka

Before the whiteman came to ruffle the cultural feathers and stirred our still clean water of criminal justice system, the Nnewi people had settled ways of punishing or treating criminal elements in the town.
As big as the town was, the leaders of the town maintained no jail or prisons.
The leaders of the town were more interested in studying the root causes of a crime than punishing the criminal.
For us, something must have ignited the fire of crime in a citizen.
In Nnewi Jurisprudence, Stealing was classified into the following groups:
1. Ohi Aguu (i.e the stealing caused by hunger)
2.Ohi Akantutu or Kleptomaniac
3. Ohi Ngbakui or stealing caused by influence of juju in which case the thief is regarded as a victim of spiritual manipulation.
4. Ohi Anya Odo or stealing done wilfully.
In a bid to curtail the first type of stealing, all levels of authority in Nnewi ensured that no young man was allowed to loaf around.
Anybody was also free to harvest from any farm at the end of harvest season, any missed out or unharvested yam, cocoyam and cassava without fear of harassment from the farm owners.
This is still practised in Nnewi till date. It is called "ije mkpa".
Most children of my age did a lot of "ije mkpa ji" or hunting for unharvested yam, a month after the first rain before the next farming season.
A sprouting yam tendril in a harvested farm was indicative of an missed out yam tuber.
A lucky hunter might dig out a big tuber or a small yam stump so small to warrant the harvester's effort during the harvest.
It was no crime for kids to pluck any fruits to quench hunger.
I could remember that I was guilty of this kind of offence and had long confessed same to the late Monsignor Joe Nwaibegbunam at St. Peter Clavers Catholic Church Otolo Nnewi.
Also, stealing of cassava or cocoyam from anybody's farm just for consumption was treated as a minor offence which attracted only a reprimand by the head of the extended family or umunna, if the victim decided to escalate the matter.
The thief would be advised to learn how to be industrious and would be assisted with farm inputs and land to become useful.
However, stealing of yam, which was regarded as the chief of all farm produce, was highly prohibited.
Any wilful stealing of yam from a farm before harvest season or from a yam barn either out of hunger or for sale attracted the punishment of being driven around the market square and taunted as "onye ohi ji" or "yam thief" and a fine.
The sheer stupidity and the style of stealing could make it so obvious that the thief was either a Kleptomaniac (Ohi Akantutu) or under the influence of juju (Ohi Ngbakui).
Thieves in these two categories were considered sick and were referred to dibias or native doctors for cure or deliverance.
The fourth category known as Ohi Anya Odo or wilful professional stealing was further classified as:
1. Isiakpu: this class were thieves whose occupation was known to everyone. They combined stealing with kidnapping and hired assassination. Even their robbery victims were so afraid to report them.
This group were sometimes patronized by the leaders or elders of the town to execute a king or a leader of enemy towns or a renegade warrior.
2. Ekpelima: this class operated with stealth and with the aid of juju that would make their victims fall asleep during their operations.
This type usually lived in isolated huts in places known as "ikpa or ozalla" which were distant from their relations' clustered settlements.
3. Abanidiegwu: this group were well trained hefty looking men that operated only in the night.
This class of thieves could empty the pen or yam barn of a household before dawn and while the victims were as sleep.
There was a man in Nnewi history who had imbued in him, the combination of the four traits of wilful criminality.
He was named Ukpabia. He hailed from Uruagu village.
Ukpabia forced Nnewi to accept his own rules that if anybody caught him stealing his yam, he would "tolerate" the owner taking back his yam but wouldn't stomach the seizure his "ukpa" or carriage basket.
The impunity of this criminal who defied all traps and plans geared towards liquidating him forced Nnewi elders to commission "igba agu" or "a spiritual enquiry ascertain which ancestor reincarnated him" to enable them figure out how to take him out.
When the result of the spiritual enquiries revealed that not only that Ukpabia was reincarnated by a deity and that he was fulfilling his destiny by stealing and that no human weapon fashioned against him would prosper, Nnewi leaders adopted another option.
Nnewi people from time immemorial, are not known to be so stupid to stick to a plan that does not work. "Ndi be anyi na abu dike n'obi kwe ujo Ekene" meaning that "it is never an act of cowdice to obey or greet an man with better weapon".
A delegation was sent to Ukpabia to broker a deal and an understanding was reached under oath.
Ukpabia wouldn't be harassed or called Isiakpu, Ekpelima or Abanidiegwu in Nnewi and in fact, anybody that openly referred to him as such would be fined provided that Ukpabia no longer would practise his stealing trade in Nnewi.
And he agreed.
Also, being that Nnewi people lived a communal life, it was very easy to identify the male species from a pool of day old chicks.
That is to say that children with clear tendencies to criminality were easily identified and trained as warriors.
There were many wars to fight with town's neighbouring towns for one cause or the other.
And in war, there so many things to loot.
While the criminally minded warriors had to win the wars to enable them loot, Nnewi leaders and elders gained from their motivation and gallantry to win wars against the town's enemies.
It was a win-win situation.
Also, the traditional chieftancy or Ozo titles were not available to criminals hence making those who wanted to take Ozo or Dim titles to lead honourable lives devoid of serious crime.
Broadly speaking, any serious society who relegates their psychologists, philosophers and thinkers who could help it study and understand the reasons why so many types of crimes flourish and who could proffer alternative solutions is doomed.
That's why the most effective or efficient EFCC or police force cannot stop criminal activities in Nigeria until we understand and fix the root causes of crimes.
However, many of our politicians and civil servants must have been reincarnated by the same deity responsible for the Ukpabianess in Ukpabia.
Nigeria should learn from precolonial Nnewi and support the Bill recently introduced by one inspired National Assembly member that proposed that amnesty should be granted to the repentant looters of our commonwealth if the looters agree to repatriate their loot, return agreed percentage to government and to invest the remainder in Nigeria's economy.
Was it not the variant of the deal Obasanjo's regime cut with Abacha family?
Evil is evil but not all stolen items are returnable otherwise, let the christians or Israel return the blessings of Isaac to the children of Esau.
Isaac was clear on who he wanted to bless but Jacob and his mother, just like our politicians, senior civil servants and their families and friends, conspired to obtain by trick that which was considered as stolen.

Ephraim Ononye: The man and his many sides BY IBE OKO AJA

Certainly, the end time is nigh and end time prophets are on the prowl. Ephraim Ononye belongs to this category of end time ministers who have turned the church into evil coven. He has many sides, the good the bad and the ugly. This self acclaimed miracle working minister has been on the prowl hiding under the white cassock and perpetrating various evil in God’s name, performing syncretic and esoteric rituals in the name of miracle.

No wonder when in the book of Matthew, 24 verse 5, Christ warned, “For many will come in my name, claiming, “I am the messiah!, and will deceive many” little did one expect that such prophecy shall so manifest in this part of the world. This part of the Bible has manifested in the life of this acclaimed priest, an Obosi born Evangelist Ephraim Ononye whose stock in trade is using the name of God in so many negative directions.

THE GENESIS This self acclaimed priest gained his popularity in 2005 as a priest of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Umuoma Uli, Anambra State, when he allegedlly dared the Ogwugwu Ndorohia shrine in Uli in the same Anambra State. This adventure yielded positive result as the priest of the shrine was said to have been converted to Christ.

Thus, Ononye was nicknamed “High tension corner and God’s Battle Axe”. His popularity became overwhelming such that many people in Uli thronged Ononye’s residence seeking for God’s favour and blessings making the Anglican Church the talk of the town. However, unknown to many the story of the miraculous” man of God has just begun.

There was a man behind the mask. Behind the mask was the face of a priest and the real Ephraim. UNVEILING THE MASK Trouble started with Ephraim Ononye in Anambra when series of reports of sexual harassment of teenagers by the said priest started filtering into the town and reaching the tables of the leadership of Anglican Church in Anambra State. All efforts by the leadership of the Church to call the priest to order proved abortive as more reports of sexual indiscipline kept filtering in against the said man of God.
Prominent among these, was the case of one Ijeoma a seventeen, (17) year old girl from Uli whom the priest was said to have impregnated and in the cause of administering abortion drugs on the teenager, the girl developed complication that led to her death.

Sources disclosed that the mother of the victim, a widow, was said to have been threatened by the said Ononye not to ever mention his name if she (the widow) loves her life. There were also several allegations of sexual engagements of the wonder working priest with so many married women that resulted to divorce, separations, and birth of illegitimate children especially imbeciles from every three out of five children he fathered out of wedlock, Very verifiable.

See Third Eye Magazine. Currently, the said priest is fingered to have given birth to over five illegitimate children from married women in Anambra state alone. The likes of Ejikeme, Wisdom, Enyiuche, and others need no soothsayer to tell anyone who come across these young children that their father may have after all be the said priest. HIS EXIT FROM ANAMBRA However, his unholy activities attained the zenith of public embarrassment to the Anglican Communion in Anambra State and the Church in a bid to save its corporate image suspended him and later transferred him to Abakaliki Diocese in Ebonyi State where his randy exploits took a different dimension.

ONONYE IN EBONYI Evangelist Ephraim Ononye exported his Ogwugwu shrine popularity to Abakaliki Diocese where he introduced a special prayer ministry and which shortly attracted so many personalities who besieged the headquarters of Abakaliki Diocese of Anglican Communion for his prayers.

Many have claimed to have been healed through handkerchiefs that have been prayed over by the man and given to those who were unable to physically attend his programme. His prominent area of “miracle” in Abakaliki was the opening of womb of barren women. No wonder, Ononye would always publish a calendar full of pictures of women who delivered twins, triplets, and in some cases quadruplets following his so called miraculous prayers.

THE TRICK UNVEILED But Ononye’s baby miracles was revealed when he was sighted in a child dedication ceremony of a woman who gave birth to a quadruplet, an eyewitness disclosed that Ononye arrived the event with a photographer whom he instructed to quickly snap the quadruplets as soon as he stands with them alongside their parents for the next edition of his miracle almanac.

Although the parents of the quadruplets were members of the Anglican Church but verifiable sources disclosed that the man and his wife never attended Ononye’s programme nor had ever received Ononye’s miracle handkerchief rather they are members of the Anglican Communion located at Kpirikpiri Area of Abakaliki. ONONYE AND THE PARABLE OF THE LEOPARD Like the proverbial leopard, which would not change its colour, Ononye’s sexual drive and indiscretion followed him and reared its ugly head once more in Abakaliki.

One would have considered it a mere rumor his unquantifiable patronage of Hotels in Abakaliki not until recently when a young lady from Okposi area of Ebonyi state told a stunning story of how the Evangelist almost deceived her into having sexual affair by tricking her into his hotel room after a crusade programme during which he made abortive attempts to rape her. The young lady (names withheld) recounted how the man of God deepened his hand into her bra and grabbed her breasts in an attempt to forcefully have sexual harvest of her. Her words “it was because of my screaming and shouts that the priest allowed me and quickly opened the door and pushed me away because he knew that my shout was capable of attracting the hotel management”.

The young lady said she later reported the attempted rape to her pastors who confronted and cautioned Ononye seriously over the incident. Like in Anambra, the said priest is seriously fingered to be the illegitimate father of one Amarachi now about five (5)) years old whose mother resides in the mile 50 area of Abakaliki. THE POWER HOUSE MINISTRY Ononye’s sojourn with full time Church business started when the Anglican Communion of Abakaliki Diocese evicted him from the All Saints Anglican Cathedral in Abakaliki as a result of insubordination and anti church activities.

Therefore, he came up with Power House Interdenominational Prayer Ministry. His sugar coated tongue made people especially women seeking miracles to fill up his Church Auditorium. And that marked the beginning of his economic boom. Less than a year into his private ministry, the church business tycoon, came up with another buster, the Power House International School where his teeming ignorant followers had registered their children and wards for their academic pursuit. Unknown to the innocent students especially the ladies, the school was not only meant for academic endeavours but also a place which could be best described as a green farm where the priest technically harvests teenage girls for his sexual satisfaction. He could do it anywhere.

A case in point was a thirteen (13) year old teenager simply known as Ifunanya, a JSS 2 student of Ononye’s school, who was recently invited by Ononye to his office and was forcefully defiled almost in tears.

The same victim who is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki as a result of the rape is said and have been warned by the priest never to mention his name but say that she was raped by cultists students in the said school. The girl narrated how she was invited by the priest to his office and was asked to kneel down while the priest locked the office and bounced on her. According to the girl, she started noticing blood flowing from her private part and accompanied by pains around her genital areas.

The matter is currently being investigated by the security agents. The most damaging scandal hovering around the priest was the death of two members of his church in 2016 during a supposedly healing session after they drank a concoction he allegedly offered them. This is in addition to an earlier report of kidnap issues around 2015 where the police in Anambra State had issued an arrest of warrant on the said priest following his suspected involvement in two kidnap cases.

How he managed to hush the case and pacified the police remains a puzzle to members of the public. DANGER SIGNAL Could it be that this man is the agent of the end time, fulfilling the prophecy of the bible about the end time, coming in the name of Christ but wearing the cloth of Anti-Christ? One could remember what the bible said about the mark of the beast which will be symbolized by three digits “666”. A phone number sited at the facebook wall of the said Ononye terrified the author of this article as it contained this dreaded digit mark of the beast “666”.

This is also in addition to a horrifying scare on the face of the said priest. Only God will save the soul of his people. This is truly an end time but the security agencies should not allow this type of character to be hovering freely on the streets.
It is also time for the Christian community to rise up to the occasion in fishing out the bad eggs among the Christian folds especially those who use the name of God to defraud innocent members of the public and perpetuate other heinous crimes.
