NAPTIP to Nigerians - Justify rape, get arrested

The Director-General (DG) of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mrs Julie Okah-Donli, has warned Nigerians to desist from giving excuses for rape.

She said that such actions could get them arrested as suspects. She issued this warning while fielding questions from news reporters in Abuja.

She queried parents for not doing enough to take care of their wards and children, explaining that 90 per cent of rape cases were committed by uncles, fathers and relations.

According to her, many careless acts by parents are responsible for rape cases across the country.

She, therefore, said that the NAPTIP would approach the Ministry of Justice to push for the establishment of special court to try rapists.

Okah-Donli also called for life imprisonment instead of capital punishment for convicted rapists, adding that there was need to educate Nigerians, especially neighbours on rape issues.

We gathered that the agency’s toll-free lines to call during distress, especially as it concerns rape are – 07030000203, 0802255627847 and 08077225566.

The NAPTIP boss said that cases could also be reported on social media platforms such as the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, among others.

She, however, said that there was no national template of victims’ trauma response to share pain, adding that the duration of psychological trauma varies from individuals.

Resident Doctors threaten nationwide indefinite strike

Resident Doctors in the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), has asked the Federal Government to pay their allowances to avoid strike action.

The President of ARD, UITH branch, Dr Lanre Olosunde, warned in a statement that the strike would commence on June 15, if their demand was not addressed.

Olosunde said that health workers were poorly paid in spite the hazard encountered with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, incurring extra expenses and facing greater health risks.

According to him, the federal government wants to stall and if possible renege on agreement signed to pay hazard allowance to health workers. He said,

“There is no better time for a government to prioritise health, workers and institutions. It is seven-days to a national indefinite strike by resident doctors. This strike is avertable if the government honours the agreement.

The government should not be insensitive to doctors who have been in the front line especially in the on-going battle against COVID-19.

Resident doctors constitute one of the major human power driving the healthcare of the nation."

Olosunde said that many doctors have died in the line of duty after been exposed to dangerous diseases, urging government to do the needful.

“We have negotiated like gentlemen over and over again, but we have been left with no other option than to speak out loud and clear with a strike since the government has refused to do the needful,” he said.

Olosunde noted that the implications of being a health worker in the COVID-19 crisis was that while others stayed at home during the lock down, health workers went to work.

No school reopening date yet - Minister of State for Education

On Monday, Mr Emeka Nwajiuba, the Minister of State for Education said that there has been no fixed date for the reopening of schools across the country.

He made this known at the Presidential Task Force Committee on COVID-19 daily news conference in Abuja. The minister said that the rumours making the rounds that schools would reopen on June 21 is fake and did not emanate from the ministry.

He added that any news about the reopening of schools would be communicated through the PTF, adding that it was not possible to release a date without the input of the PTF.

He said that the reopening of schools would involve the advice of experts on when it would be safer to reopen schools, stressing that government would avoid the mistake of “shipping the students in and out of school.”

The minister said that the ministry would not lead Nigerians into danger because it was in a hurry to reopen schools, adding that it would only reopen them when it was convinced that it was safe to reopen schools across the country.

“Of all the things I will love to do, is that l will not want to experiment with our children. What we are planning is to bring those that will be exiting from Junior Secondary to Senior Secondary and those who will be writing the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to come for their examinations.

We are, however, looking at when the inter-state lockdown will be reopened so that the students can move to their schools to write their exams,” he said.

He said that the ministry was studying the time-table to know when it would be convenient as soon as there was ease on inter-state lockdown. He urged students and parents to be wary of fake news peddlers.

He said that once the ministry is convinced that it is convenient for the students to move to their schools to write their examinations, it would communicate the date to their parents and the public.
