Barcelona shouldn't re-sign Neymar after bad decision to join PSG – Elber

If the Brazilian wanted to be the world's best, he should never have joined Paris Saint-Germain, according to his compatriot.

Former Brazil striker Giovane Elber feels Barcelona should not re-sign Neymar as he questioned the forward's decision to join Paris Saint-Germain.

Neymar, 28, has been linked with a return to Barca , nearly three years after joining PSG for a world-record €222 million (£198m/$263m) fee.

But Elber, who starred for Bayern Munichand played 15 games for Brazil during his career, said the Liga giants should opt against taking Neymar back to Camp Nou.

Asked by Cadena SER if Barca should sign Neymar again, Elber said: "No. As he left Barcelona, for me there is no possibility of returning to Barcelona."

Elber added: "For me, Neymar behaved very badly with Barca, because when he wanted to leave Barcelona he said he wanted to be the best in the world.

"But for God's sake, you are not going to be the best in the world playing for PSG. For that you have to go to Real Madrid or Barcelona, to some team where you can win the Champions League.

"I believe that PSG will still not be able to win the Champions League in the next three or four years."

Neymar has won three Ligue 1 titles among numerous domestic trophies since arriving at PSG, the latest coming this season which was declared finished due to the interruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Ligue 1 giants were into the Champions League quarter-finals when this season was suspended, coming from behind to down Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.

Amid the constant links to Barca, which were also present during last summer's transfer window, Neymar affirmed that he was concentrating on regaining fitnessin order to compete in the European competition.

'Ferguson killed me!' - Nani was 'scared' of Man Utd boss

The Portugal international viewed the legendary Scottish manager as a father figure but he struggled to communicate with his boss at first.

Nani has admitted that he was initially "scared" of Sir Alex Ferguson, revealing that the former Manchester United boss once "killed" him and Ryan Giggs in front of their team-mates.

Nani arrived at Old Trafford in 2007 from Sporting CP and struggled for a long time with the language barrier. However, the winger knew just how angry Ferguson was with him after a missed penalty against Fulham in 2010.

Giggs was on spot-kick duty that day at Craven Cottage but the in-form Nani took it upon himself to try to make it 3-1 to United. Unfortunately, the Portuguese winger missed and, to compound his disappointment, Fulham then snatched a point with an 88th-minute equaliser, much to Ferguson's fury.

“I was playing unbelievable with a lot of confidence," Nani explained on the Official Manchester United Podcast. "We won a penalty and it was Ryan Giggs who took the penalties but I felt confident and Giggs didn’t say anything.

"So, I took the penalty but I missed. The penalty would have made it 3-1 and, in the dressing room afterwards, [Ferguson] killed me. He said, ‘Nani, who do you think you are? Who gave you permission to take the penalty?! Ryan?!'

"And then he killed Ryan Giggs, because he said, ‘Ryan, why did you let him take the penalty!’ Ryan said, ‘He grabbed the ball and I let him.’

"Oh my god, that day was incredible!"

To make matters worse, Nani had to share a care with the irate Ferguson after the game.

“I drove him back home and he didn’t talk to me,” the 33-year-old added. "I felt very uncomfortable!"

However, Nani explained that as his English improved, so too did his relationship with Ferguson.

“At the beginning, I was very scared of him. Like a father, when you make a mistake or do something wrong, you know?" the Euro 2016 winner explained.

"I would see him talking with other players and I wanted to be involved but I was thinking, "What am I going to say? I didn't know.

“So, I was scared of him until I learned to understand the language better and was able to express myself.

"My English has never been perfect, and is never going to be, but, at that time, it was worse than now and when we he found I could speak more with him, he started coming to me and giving me more attention.

"From then on, I learned more about Sir Alex Ferguson.”

It wasn’t just Ferguson whom Nani struggled to bond with at first either. The Orlando City winger also took time to strike up a rapport with his team-mates.

Rooney: Pique was 'bullied' out of Premier League at Bolton

The Spain international has had a stellar career with Barcelona but only after failing to make the grade at Old Trafford.

Gerard Pique was "bullied" out of the Premier League because he could not handle Bolton Wanderers' physicality, according to Wayne Rooney.

Before he returned to Barcelona and became a key figure in sides that won La Liga and the Champions League on multiple occasions, Pique spent four years at Manchester United.

However, with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand the regular centre-back pairing of choice for Alex Ferguson, Pique only featured in 12 Premier League games prior to re-joining Barca in 2008.

And it was a game in Pique's final season - a 1-0 loss to Bolton when the 20-year-old was hauled off after 59 minutes - which Rooney believed spelled the end for his time at Old Trafford.

“Bolton away more or less finished Gerard Pique's career at United,” Rooney wrote in his column for The Sunday Times.

“He was young and got bullied there and I think that's when Fergie decided that, physically, he wasn't right for the Premier League.

“I always remember Vidic: if we were going to Bolton — and it was the same when he was about to face Didier Drogba — he would be in the gym for two or three days before, pumping himself up."

Bolton's only goal that day came courtesy of Nicolas Anelka, when he took advantage of a mistimed Pique leap to score, and Rooney feels that working as a team rather than relying on individual brilliance was the key to their success.

“Bolton had bits of quality too and the way they fought and worked as a unit, then found moments to use that quality, was typical of how a team can beat better players by being more than the sum of its parts.

“It happened when United played Barcelona in the 2008 Champions League semi-final. Barca played the better football by a mile in both legs and that was 180 minutes of pure hard work, of hanging in there, and riding your luck.

Covid-19 Outbreak in Nigeria Is Just One of Africa’s Alarming Hot Spots

Dozens of doctors are infected and gravediggers are overwhelmed in Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest city, where inaction led to an unchecked outbreak. Across Africa, other hot spots are emerging.

DAKAR, Senegal — In the northern Nigerian city of Kano, some people say they now get four or five death notices on their phones each day: A colleague has died. A friend’s aunt. A former classmate.

The gravediggers of the city, one of the biggest in West Africa, say they are working overtime. And so many doctors and nurses have been infected with the coronavirus that few hospitals are now accepting patients.

Officially, Kano has reported 753 cases and 33 deaths attributed to the virus. But in reality, the metropolis is experiencing a major, unchecked outbreak, according to doctors and public health experts. It could be one of the continent’s worst.

The coronavirus has been slower to take hold in Africa than on other continents, according to the numbers released daily by the World Health Organization.

But blazing hot spots are beginning to emerge. Kano is only one of several places in Africa where a relatively low official case count bears no resemblance to what health workers and residents say they are seeing on the ground.

In Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, officials say that burials have tripled. In Tanzania, after cases suddenly rose and the United States Embassy issued a health alert, the Tanzanian government abruptly stopped releasing its data.

Kano’s state government, until recently, claimed a spate of unusual deaths was caused not by the coronavirus, but by hypertension, diabetes, meningitis or acute malaria. There is little social distancing, and few people are being tested.

“The leadership is in denial,” said Usman Yusuf, a hematology-oncology professor and the former head of Nigeria’s national health insurance agency. “It’s almost like saying there is no Covid in New York.”

He said he thought a significant portion of the population was probably infected in Kano, a city with an estimated five million people (though there has been no census since 2006).

Though they have now acknowledged they have a problem with Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, the authorities in Kano spent precious weeks denying it, despite the surge in what Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the state governor, called “mysterious deaths.”

“So far, there’s been nothing to suggest that they are linked with Covid-19,” Mr. Ganduje posted on Twitter on April 27, when, according to doctors in Kano’s hospitals, the city was already firmly in the grip of a serious coronavirus outbreak.

There was nothing mysterious about what doctors said they were seeing at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, the city’s main public hospital. Starting well before Kano’s first case was reported on April 11, the hospital saw a steady stream of older patients with fevers, coughs, difficulty breathing and low oxygen saturation levels, many of them with underlying health conditions.

Doctors at the hospital called the government’s response team. Sometimes it took 24 hours to get a call back. Sometimes, the team refused to test or isolate patients, saying they did not qualify because they had not traveled recently.

Ronaldo was the best' - Roberto Carlos says not even Messi and Cristiano compare to Brazil legend

The legendary left-back feels that his former Selecao and Real Madrid team-mate could do it all despite playing in a far tougher era for forwards.

Roberto Carlos says that there will never be another Ronaldo, arguing that not even Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar compare to his former Brazilteam-mate.

After announcing himself to the football world with a sensational 1996-97 campaign at Barcelona, Ronaldo was subsequently hindered by knee problems over the next five years.

He returned to full fitness, however, in time to fire Brazil to victory at the 2002 World Cup, with his heroics in Japan and South Korea earning him a move to Real Madrid.

Ronaldo went on to spend five years at Santiago Bernabeu playing alongside Carlos, who says that his compatriot was the outstanding talent in a group of superstars that came to be known as 'The Galacticos'.

"Ronaldo stood out in training. He was the best. There will never be another Ronaldo 'Fenomeno'," Carlos told Goalafter the Heineken Legends Challenge. "Not Neymar, Cristiano or Messi – Ronaldo is unique.

"I think in our generation it was harder to score goals. It was more physical back then and attackers were less protected. But Ronaldo could do everything."

Even after his World Cup heroics, the injury-prone Ronaldo was greeted with some scepticism when he joined the likes of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane at Madrid in 2002.

However, as Carlos fondly recalls, his compatriot dispelled all doubts over his fitness with a brace on his debut against Alaves.

"I knew how unbelievable he was when he arrived but a lot of people at Madrid didn't," the legendary left-back added. "He surprised a lot of people. I remember 80,000 people were very happy and pleasantly surprised by him."

Carlos has nothing but fond memories of his 11-year stint in the Spanish capital, revealing that even though the dressing room was packed with some of the biggest names in football, they all put their egos to one side for the sake of the team.

"We had an amazing atmosphere inside the club," the 47-year-old enthused. "Even though there were huge players, it was just a group of great people working in the same environment. We were all great friends and still are.

"It was spectacular. Real Madrid is bigger than egos. The club is huge and the culture of the club was so big that we were able to sign huge players. It was then up to the players to adapt to the culture and not the other way around.

  • "Everyone had to speak Spanish in the dressing room. The only one who decided to speak more Portuguese than Spanish was [David] Beckham because he wouldn't leave my house! He was close to Ronaldo and me, so his Portuguese got better than his Spanish."
